Choosing Between PRF and PRP for Med Spa Under-Eye Treatments

We explain why Platelet-Rich Fibrin outperforms PRP for tear trough rejuvenation through slow growth factor release and superior fibrin matrix formation.

By Joseph Coram

We often see clients confused by the technical differences between PRP and PRF when addressing hollow tear troughs. While both involve autologous blood concentrates, we prefer Platelet-Rich Fibrin for the delicate under-eye area because it is processed at a lower centrifuge speed. This slower spin preserves more leukocytes and mesenchymal stem cells while creating a natural fibrin matrix that acts as a temporary scaffold. Unlike PRP, which releases its growth factors in a sudden burst, PRF provides a sustained release over several days. From an operational standpoint, we find that PRF offers a more significant clinical improvement in skin quality and volume without the need for synthetic additives like anticoagulants. We prioritize PRF because the resulting clot allows for longer-lasting tissue regeneration in the periorbital region, leading to higher patient satisfaction and better long-term retention rates for our aesthetic practices.
